Log in to Jülich DATA¶
Jülich DATA uses Helmholtz AAI (read why) as its identity management system, allowing for multihomed logins and easy worldwide collaboration. Please find documentation of necessary steps to log in below plus more context.

Step 1: Click on “Log In” in the upper right corner.

Step 2: Click on “Log In with Helmholtz”. Expect to be taken to a service with a different look.

Step 3: Search for your preferred login and click on the result.
- Option 1: Use your your work account from your (eduGAIN participating) home institution.
- Option 3: Use your scientific ORCiD by searching for “ORCID” in the list.
- Option 2: Use your personal GitHub account by searching for “GitHub” in the list.
The example above shows the result when searching for Forschungszentrum Jülich as your home institution. Clicking on the result will forward you to your home institutional login web service (with a different look again).

Step 4: If you opted for logging in with your home institution, please follow the instructions of your identity provider. The example above is for users using an email address by Forschungszentrum Jülich. Your mileage may vary.
After a successful login you will be redirected to Jülich DATA, ready to manage some data. Beware that a decentralized data manager might still need to grant permissions to you, depending on the dataverse you are going to use.

If you are not sent back and greeted with a message that your account is not known yet, please continue reading the next section about registering.
One-time registration¶
To create a user profile in the repository, you need an account within the “Helmholtz Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure” (see below about why Helmholtz AAI?). If you haven’t already registered while using another service, you need to sign up for the first (and only) time. The procedure takes about 5 minutes time.
Note: A Helmholtz AAI account is required no matter what, unrelated to being a staff member of Forschungszentrum Jülich.
Note
We assume you’re reading this after going through above. If not, please start there. For the impatient: log in at Helmholtz AAI.

Step A: After logging in successfully, you will be prompted that the account is not yet known. Click “Register” to sign up for an account within the identity management system of Helmholtz AAI.
Please accept the terms and conditions of Helmholtz AAI regarding the usage. If the registration was successful, you will see this in a modal popup.
Step B: Go (again) to Jülich DATA and follow the steps from the above section to log in (again). Your previously used identity provider should be pre-selected, creating a shortcut for the third step.

Step C: You are asked for your consent to forward your data from the Helmholtz AAI to Jülich DATA. Checking the box “Remember the settings for this service and do not show this dialog again” makes the consent permanent. You’ll be redirected to Jülich DATA, facing an editable form.
Todo
Create & add screenshot for step 4.
Step D: You can create your profile in Jülich DATA now. Choose your user name freely, but for easier lookups you should stick with sth. reasonable like the first part of your mail address.
For FZJ staff: please enter ‘Forschungszentrum Jülich’ under “Affilitation”.
After confirming the terms of use you can activate your account with “Create Account”.
Why Helmholtz AAI?¶
Research Centre Jülich is part of multitudes of international and national scientific research projects. One of the primary goals of our institutional repository is to allow for collaboration on published and unpublished data, no matter what is your home institution.
In many cases scientists stay only for a while at our research institution before moving to another. Having an option to still collaborate on their data after leaving enables new options for extended partnership and sustainability.
The idea of sharing resources, data and knowledge is growing within the scientific community. Examples for this are HIFIS and HIDA. With Helmholtz being one of the big communities in Germany, the Helmholtz AAI allows trusted grants of permissions for an ever growing list of services within it.
Helmholtz AAI connects with eduGAIN, ORCiD and GitHub, which should allow a majority of scientists to “just connect”. Please find instructions above how to register and access Jülich DATA.
